what a night..!
In front of a sold out crowd at Holiday Skating Center in Delran, New Jersey, the premier bout of the Penn Jersey She Devils was full of hard hitting, high speed and rough and tumble derby action from the first whistle! The Sadistic Sweethearts and the Fallen Angels matched point for point in the first two periods, only to have the Sweethearts succumb to the third period onslaught of the Fallen Angels, who skated like bats out of hell to win the opening series 50 - 35.
Fans were treated to some early action with an on the rink wrestling match between Candi KaBOOM! and Havoc after they both hit the wood, tangled up in some heavy blocking action, prompting an official time out to break it up and assess the penalties. That little tussle led to some hot tempered action for the next few jams, with Sweethearts and Angels hitting the floor and a few skaters winding up in the crowd, giving a few surprised fans a big She Devils "Hi, how are you!".
Among those fans were some of our derby sisters in arms from Harrisburg, PA and Long Island, all great ladies and great supporters and friends of the She Devils, who made the long journey to be on hand for the first night of what promises to be great derby action in the months to come.

Roller derby queen Ann Calvello dies after cancer bout

Ann Calvello, a grand doyenne of roller derby whose outrageously dyed hair and brawling spirit made her a Bay Area icon, died Tuesday (3/14/06) in a Peninsula hospital after a brief battle with cancer.

She was 76.

Calvello had been diagnosed with liver cancer just a week ago and had been given four to six months to live, said Bill Prieto, Calvello's life partner of 30 years.

``I'm just in shock. I don't know what to say,'' he said Tuesday night from the San Bruno home they shared. ``She didn't even last a week.''

Prieto said he took Calvello to the emergency room Tuesday after she complained of pain. She died about 3 p.m. at the hospital.

Calvello enjoyed fame as a star on the San Francisco Bay Bombers after helping introduce the rough-and-tumble spectator sport to the country decades ago. Calvello joined her first roller derby team in 1948 when she was only 18.

Her looks earned her the nickname ``Banana Nose,'' and she quickly garnered a reputation as a bad girl because of her splashy clothing and hair color that ranged from purple to green and even polka dots.

Roller derby, a phenomenon that reached its zenith in the 1970s, matched teams of men and women on a banked-track oval where choreographed moves and knockdown brawls were the rule.

Calvello, who also skated professionally in Philadelphia and New Jersey, later was signed to the U.S. team and traveled throughout the world. She became an international legend, packing arenas and dazzling television audiences, at one point earning the moniker Roller Derby Queen.

Calvello continued to entertain crowds even in her later years, skating in charity events well into her 60s. And her influence on the sport still looms large. Teams in a women-only league in Austin compete annually for the Calvello Cup.

Carol ``Peanuts'' Meyers Roman, a former member of the Bombers, remembered getting into a fight with her old teammate on the track. The fight continued in the dressing room.

``She came at me and grabbed me around the waist and head'' and soon equipment was flying around the room, Roman said.

Roman, who was soon to be married, got 17 stitches in her scalp.

The fiery Calvello, who always got the last word, labeled Roman ``Frankenstein's bride.'' Then she volunteered to stand in for Roman as the bride.

She loved the give-and-take of roller derby and was always quick with a jibe, whether kidding about trackside broadcaster Walt Harris' toupee or Jerry Seltzer's attire, hanging the sobriquet of ``Drip Dry'' on the game's impresario.

``Annie would say, `Jerry, as much money as you have, you should buy a better suit than a drip and dry,' '' Roman said. ``That was Annie, she had a name for everybody.''

Roman said Calvello's unbridled wit and mouth kept Harris on his toes during interviews with her.

``It was hard for him to relax with Annie,'' she said. ``He never knew what she was going to say.''

Harris described Calvello as a larger-than-life figure worthy of a book. In 2001, Calvello was the subject of a biographical documentary, ``Demon of the Derby.''

Ever the iconoclast, Calvello was something of a loner to her teammates outside the rink.

``I wasn't one of those who hung around the skaters,'' she told the Mercury News in February. ``I'd go down to North Beach.''

The car wash...

Hurricane Katrina Relief...
The Penn Jersey She Devils, in conjunction with Cornwell's Skating Center, will be holding a Car Wash this Sunday, September 4th, from 10:00 AM till 1:00 PM. She Devils merchandise, as well as refreshments will also be available.
A portion of the proceeds from this event will be going to several relief organizations to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Cornwell's is located on Route 13, between Street Road and Woodhaven Road in Bensalem, PA, right off Route 95.

He came to our rink last night and help put the girls through the paces with Judy and has offered his assistance to help the She Devils do it right! How lucky we are to have so many talented and dedicated friends! We must be doing something right.

Philly's own, Combat Zone Wrestling, held it's Best of the Best event on Saturday night, May 14. Of course, where ever you find hard hitting action like this, you usually find some of the Penn Jersey She Devils!

Here's part of our crew at our table, where we showed roller derby tapes, handed out info on our upcoming fund raising events, gave out recruitment kits and, most importantly, listened to the enthusiastic response from fans to bringing REAL roller derby action back home to Philly!
Speaking of action, not only did our ladies enjoy the high-flying, hard slamming action in the ring, at halftime they gave the crowd a little taste of just what REAL roller derby action is all about!

More news...
the Penn Jersey She Devils are living the charmed life these days. It looks like Jeffrey Hart, 1972 Rookie of the Year and skater with the 1972 Champion Eastern Warriors is very interested in helping with training our girls in the fine art of Roller Derby. He's going to come out to our next open skate, which will be this Saturday at our new rink and introduce himself to the girls. Ken and I had the pleasure of spending some time with Jeffrey over dinner recently and he was openly enthusiastic about our efforts. He's a wonderful and warm person and we welcome his interest and input and, most of all, his friendship.
When Jeffrey isn't hanging out with us crazy roller derby folks, he's a Program Coordinator with The Art Sanctuary in North Philadelphia.

Also, in the help and friendship area, the Penn Jersey She Devils would like to shout out a big THANKS! to Suzy Hotrod, of our friendly neighbors to the north, the Gotham Girls! She came down to hang with some of us last Saturday and really went above and beyond with friendly advice and some really great basic skills training and drills with some of the girls out on the rink. She most definitely ROCKS!!!.

well...
so here's what's been going on:
1. We have a rink. Some minor details need to be attended to and some conversations need to happen, but for the most part it's a done deal. The floor is fantastic, it's the best maintained wood we've seen. There is a two-tiered public area that will hold at least five hundred people and some fund raising tables and such with no problem. Great lighting system, great sound system, in-house pro shop and very supportive staff! Only fifteen or twenty minutes out of Center City Philadelphia with loads of free parking on the grounds.
2. We have a speed skating trainer. After a year of trying to find this fellow, it turns out that he is associated with the very same rink! Our girls are going to be trained by the one and only Buggy Allmond, Champion Speed Skater and all around great guy. Having someone of his talent and ability work with us is beyond anything we could wish for. Thanks, Buggy!
3. Mary Allmond, Buggy's wife, runs the pro shop and is going to make sure our girls are properly outfitted with everything they need and she's a regional representative for USARS!
4. We had a meeting with someone this week who seemed quite interested in maybe being our derby coach! He's a former Eastern Warriors’ skater out of Philadelphia, who was on one the championship teams of the seventies and was also a Rookie of the Year. He's well known in derby circles and will be another major addition to our growing number of supporters. We'll let you know soon how it works out! (We'll be practicing groveling and begging, just in case that's what it takes, that's how much we like this guy!)

The girls have been busy getting the word out around town. There are lots of businesses and organizations that are interested in being She Devils sponsors, as well as bands that want to do fund raising events with us, clubs that are willing to hold events for us, artists who want to do free photo sessions and illustrate our posters and handouts, we have someone who is going to build our Penalty Wheel and any other stuff we might need for our matches, it's freaking mindblowing! The City of Philadelphia is starting to get She Devils fever, thanks to the girls!
We had our second meeting at Drinker's Tavern last night and another eighteen girls signed up, bringing the ranks up to thirty three as of now. Along with that we have promises of help from their friends who are willing to do whatever we need them to do to make this happen.   The girls decided what committees they want to be on so we can start ironing out some of the nasty legal and accounting stuff that needs to be taken care of, as well as writing our by-laws and team rules, setting up dues, car pools, phone chains, the usual stuff.
Ok, that's enough blabbing for now. Ken and I are suffering from spinning head syndrome right now and it's great to have so many girls who want to help with the "dirty work" that is necessary to make this happen, and so many others who are ready to pitch in and make sure we don't loose it!

SheDevils 1st Recruiting Party..!
Well, we took our first step this past Wednesday night and it turned into a leap!
Our first shot at recruiting was a pleasantly unexpected success - it looks like we have one hell of a crew of incredible women who are just itching to get this show on the road and start rumbling!

Well, they started showing up right on time! Here's Ken going over our info and recruitment kit with a future SheDevil!
We hung out at the bar for a while and got everyone fired up watching the DVD of the Texas Rollergirls Championship match and then headed downstairs.

Like I said, these ladies are ready to get rockin' - before the gig broke up sometime Wednesday night we were already talking about fund raising, making costumes, picking out their roller names and picking up blocking and takedown tips from Ken! All in all, you couldn't ask for a better group of rowdy, rockin' rollergirls!
Philly was the home of knock down, drag out roller derby action years ago and we're bringin' it back! We're gonna kick butt, make noise and have fun!
We're having another get together on March 9th at Drinker's to start setting up committees and figuring out who will be doing what and how.
If you couldn't make it out this Wednesday and still want to jump on board, drop us a line and let us know you're coming in March, we'll be looking for you!

The Jersey Bloodhound and I are meeting with the manager of Drinker's Tavern this week to set up a date within the next two week so we can all get together, meet each other and see who wants to help us get this thing off the ground.
I will post info here as soon as we have a date set up and the Bloodhound will email everyone who has written to us recently. I hope you can all make it out to meet us and each other.

Let's show the other leagues that Philly can raise some Roller Hell!

Hey, y'all!
The Bloodhound and I are still alive and kicking! We've been having a hell of a time recruiting! I can't tell you how many emails we've gotten from girls that seemed really interested and haven't heard anything back, much to our discouragement!HELP!
We have had some promising communications over the past week, though, so maybe we'll actually get this thing off the ground and up on it's wheels soon!
I promise to post more news, good or bad, as it happens.

We've been flooding the area with flyers, hope we get some hits soon!
Also, we may have some help with recruiting around the end of the year, more info on that as it evolves.

stuff is happening...
the artwork for the logo is at the button maker, should have some nice one inch pinbacks soon! Our recruitment flyers are done and we'll be handing out the first batch at an extreme wrestling match this weekend, while proudly wearing our PHSDRD shirts!

quick update...
The Bloodhound and I are back from a much needed vacation and are back in gear! Our recruitment flyers will be done in the next week or so and we will be flooding the Philadelphia metro area looking for the right ladies to wear the She Devils logo!
I'm also working out a deal with a local fellow to make some handout stuff for us, probably some buttons. Anyone have any suggestions on what worked for you as a handout to get the league's name out in public?
